Approved Internal Verifier Status

Approved Internal Verifier Status (AIVS) is the mechanism whereby the OCN approves named individuals to authorise the Recommendation of the Award of Credit (RAC) for specific courses at a recognised Centre. This should only be done when the Internal Verifier is satisfied, on the basis of their verification activities, that the learners have met the appropriate assessment criteria.

  • AIVS are only approved following completion of the appropriate NOCN training and providing evidence of good practice.
  • They are approved individually, for a particular Centre and, in larger Centres, normally for a particular curriculum area.
  • AIVS relates only to an individual verifier within a particular Centre and is not in any way transferable, either between verifiers or between Centres.
  • AIVS can be withdrawn at any time if either the practice of the verifier or the structure and support provided by the Centre falls below the expected standard.

In cases where AIVS is not held, the Internal Verifier will need to arrange for the sign off of the Recommendation of the Award of Credit through the OCN. This will normally be by the OCN’s appointed Quality Reviewer for the Centre, or possibly in particular cases by a External Subject Moderator who is a subject specialist.

All OCN Recognised Centres should seek to achieve AIVS for their OCN provision in order to both ensure and measure the rigour and robustness of internal quality systems and to avoid potential future increases in the cost of quality review.

A Centre can nominate staff for AIVS by completing and returning the AIVS application form to the OCN South Eastern Region quality team. Upon receipt, either an individual’s AIVS status will be confirmed or the appropriate training route identified.
