GCSE Equivalents

OCNSER GCSE Equivalent Page

Introduction

Immediately below this introduction is an important statement about the aims and purposes of the AVA GCSE Equivalent Scheme. The middle section below sets out the AVA's options for running GCSE equivalents as a part of Access to HE provision. During 2009-10 we will be revising our existing GCSE equivalent schemes and the draft GCSE English equivalent is already out for consultation (see just below this text). The lower section contains a variety of downloadable resources to support tutors in centres.

OCNSER Statement about the Aims and Purposes of the Access GCSE Equivalent Schemes

These schemes are only for use by students on OCNSER Access to HE Diplomas. The GCSE equivalent schemes are intended to enable Access students to meet the matriculation requirements for entry to a range of HE degree courses where a GCSE pass at grade C or above is required.

The schemes do NOT have any function beyond this and are not intended to be used as a substitute for any statutory requirements placed on an individual in order to be competent to practice, whether this be as a teacher, nurse, midwife etc.

Access centres must make clear the status of any GCSE equivalent to students upon commencement of the Access Diploma. Students obtaining a place on an HE course using an OCNSER approved GCSE equivalent scheme, must be advised that they may have to undertake additional statutory requirements (such as obtaining an actual GCSE or taking another prescribed test) in order to be qualified to enter a specific career.

Summary of how to use OCNSER GCSE Equivalent Schemes

USING AN OCNSER GCSE EQUIVALENT SCHEME INSIDE AN ACCESS COURSE

At the start of the year

  • Choose which OCNSER GCSE Equivalent Scheme you are going to use (old OCNHIS or OCNKM)
  • Ensure that the relevant GCSE equivalent units from your chosen scheme are included within the A1 Unit lists for the relevant Access to HE Diplomas at your centre.
  • Notify OCNSER Access Office that you are going to offer GCSE equivalent(s) using the start of year ‘Courses Running’ form

At the end of the year

  • Ensure that the correct units for the GCSE Equivalent have been achieved for your students.
  • Include the evidence for external moderation visit
  • On RACs tick the relevant GCSE Equivalent box(es) and return to OCNSER Access office with any required supporting evidence, e.g. APL forms etc.(only if APL is used).

Using NOCN Quals in Progression an Outside Access Course

At the start of the year

  • Notify OCNSER that you intend to register students on the appropriate NOCN Qualification in Progression using  the ‘Courses Running’ form.
  • RACs and other documentation will then be dealt with by our Addlestone Office in Surrey.

Before the  Exam/Final Assessment Board

  • Ensure you have had a visit from your OCNSER Quality Reviewer and that achievement of the relevant units is confirmed

At the end of the year

  • On RACs tick the relevant GCSE Equivalent box(es) and return to OCNSER Access office with any required supporting evidence, e.g. APCL forms for claiming inclusion of credits into Access Diploma.
